STRATEGY AND PLANNING SERVICES

Whether it is for a profit-making, nonprofit, or governmental organization, strategy and planning are essential aspects of every enterprise. Without carefully developed and well-orchestrated plans it is difficult for an organization to know where it is going, or how it will get there.

PLANNING ACTIVITIES
Planning must be undertaken at all levels within an organization, to include plans for the overall organization, plans for each particular department or functional area, and plans for specific projects and individual managers to ensure that each element of an undertaking is handled efficiently and completed on time.

As well, planning must be developed for differing time-frames. Long range planning or strategic planning is undertaken for one or more years at a time, and it sets the stage for shorter term planning activities.

The most common planning is annual planning, which is undertaken each year and usually involves setting enterprise objectives and developing plans for each of the functional departments within the organization, such as marketing, finance, sales, and operations.

Within most organizations there are also certain individual projects or special initiatives that require project planning, market planning, sales account planning, advertising planning, and budgeting.

STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT
Concurrent with planning, is the development of strategies.

While objectives specify “what” will be done and how it will be measured, strategies articulate “how” that objective will be accomplished. Here is an example of how objectives and strategies differ:


Sample Objective: Enter the biotech market for medical instruments and achieve 1% market share within 2 years.

Sample Strategy: Deploy a 6 month test market, refine the product with test market learnings, and expand during year 2 into high CDI/BDI markets.

Without strategies, objectives often remain unaccomplished and organizational efforts lack coordination and orchestration. Therefore, while objectives need to be specific and measurable targets of success, strategies need to be creative and define the path to success.
